Kirkwall was a dank, dingy place; the air was a cacophony of unpleasant scents, like the stench of fish and salt mingling with the smell of sweat and garbage. It pretended that it wasn't like this, which made things worse. At least Ferelden knew it smelled of wet dog and embraced it wholeheartedly.

As she walked through the streets, her path illuminated by the light of the moon and occasional lamppost, Charumati mused to herself that had she smelled Kirkwall before she smelled Denerim she would have felt more affinity to her adopted home sooner. She sighed, a wave of melancholy washing over her. It had been years since she had set foot in her home in Denerim, not since she had approved the final touches on the repairs. Being in Denerim on a permanent basis was still unappealing, but she did find herself missing the city more as of late. Perhaps, when this contract was over, she would stop by briefly before returning to Llomerryn.

Raucous voices and the clatter of dishes jolted her out of her reverie. She found herself in front of the Hanged Man, which she only knew by passing reputation. It wasn't often that her employer allowed her the freedom to leave his estate, and it had been several months since she had the opportunity to relax and have a pint.

With only a small tug of apprehension, she stepped inside the tavern. It was full, and everyone seemed to be having an enjoyable, if not boisterous time. A rare, fleeting smile crossed her lips -- this seemed like a fine place to unwind.

The bartender seemed to be engaged with another patron, so she fished a few silver pieces out of her purse and set them on the table. "Excuse me," she said during a lull in the exchange, her soft, husky voice only just audible above the din, "Could I get a pint of your most average whatever?"

Charumati is a serious, soft-spoken woman with an inflexible sense of justice — one that could be said to be almost naive, or idealistic. She doesn't necessarily follow what's ethical or legal if it stands in the way of being just.

Her first loyalty is to herself, always, in the sense she will put a priority on her own morality, code of ethics, and personal interests. This isn't to say she's incapable of situational loyalty or honourable action, far from it; she keeps her word in any given situation, but that word doesn't inherently carry over to the next encounter. This mindset makes her an ideal mercenary, as she feels no obligation to previous employers.

The downside is that it's rare that Charumati forms lasting bonds. She has no close friends and is frequently lonely. Her temperament can also lead to misunderstandings that she is incapable of rectifying on her own; her demeanour is frequently understood to be cold and unfeeling, and she doesn't comprehend why others do not understand her thought process.

She is wary of mages, though not against them. Charumati finds herself sympathising with the pro-mage movement, but feels that the situation is more nuanced than either side is willing to admit.




The only child of moderately wealthy merchants in Dairsmuid, Charumati wanted for very little; she was educated by a reputable tutor and learned how to speak, read, and write in Rivaini and Common; she also learned basic arithmetic, local and world history, basic dagger and hand-to-hand combat skills, and -- at her tutor's insistence -- basic magical theory in order to understand how best to counter a rogue mage.

Unfortunately, her father lost the family status in a series of failed business deals during her eighteenth summer; as a result, the family was forced to relocate to Llomerryn using the last of their savings.

In Llomerryn, Charumati began to train to be a duelist after seeing competitive dueling during a local festival. She admired the duelists' fleet footwork and the agility and strength required to be successful. Unlike other rogue specialties, duelists were straightforward and fought with honour -- something that appealed to her greatly. She learned the basics on the streets but her father was able to use the last of his contacts to secure her mentorship with a local duelist master.

She trained hard, and in her twenty-fifth year she left her master's tutelage and began advertising her service as a mercenary. Her jobs were simple -- escort a merchant caravan from Llomerryn to Dairsmuid, accompany a local official to Kont-arr, and the like. It was during this time she picked up some basic conversational Qunlat from Tal-Vashoth mercenaries she worked with on various contracts, though she is far from fluent.

Her parents were, at first, dismayed by her choice to become a mercenary. Her father had high hopes for her to join up as a body guard to one of the Rivaini nobility, while her mother had set her sights higher and onto the royal guard. However, their relationship with each other was one of support; their disappointment was put on the shelf to support their daughter in her endeavours -- helping her out of tight financial spots (her parents never reclaimed their former wealth and status, but found moderate success selling traditionally crafted Rivaini fabrics), welcoming her home with a hot meal and a warm place to sleep whenever she returned to Llomerryn. Charumati thrived, financially and emotionally, and her parents came around and took pride in her success.

Eventually, one of her contracts took her from Rivain to Ferelden, which Charumati hated at first. It was cold, damp, and smelled incessantly of dog. But as she travelled through the country's varied landscapes it and its people began to grow on her. After saving up enough money, Charumati moved to Denerim.

During the Fifth Blight, Charumati spent very little time at home. Shortly before the Ostagar catastrophe she was contracted by a minor noble who lived just outside of Highever proper who kept her on as his armed escort as he moved his valuables to Orlais. The events of the Fifth Blight affected her very little personally until the siege of Denerim; her experience was limited to passing caravans of refugees heading out of Ferelden and into Orlais and the Free Marches. The noble she worked for wasn't particularly magnanimous, and always instructed her to close the curtains in his carriage so as to avoid the stares of the less fortunate.

Her contract ended a mere week before the siege of Denerim. During that week, Charumati found herself troubled by the conditions of the city; refugees were living in even worse squalor than the elves in the alienage. They had no food, no water, no way to dispose of waste except in the streets. She couldn't help but "accidentally" drop a few sovereigns near the most ragged looking of them.

During the siege, Charumati helped escort refugees out of the city, protecting them from stray darkspawn, as the Warden and his forces clashed against the horde. Her home was destroyed during the siege, and Charumati returned to Llomerryn to be with her parents. She abstained from any contract work after a few weeks, choosing instead to spend time with her family. Watching families be torn apart by creatures with no honour, no decency, no self control... it was horrific, and she wanted to spend some time with the people she loved the most. She knew that while she had been lucky in her contracts, her line of work was frequently dangerous and she didn't want to find herself wishing she had been able to see her parents one last time. Eventually, with the help of her mother and father, Charumati was able to process the devastation she witnessed during the siege and felt more comfortable returning to mercenary work (though she makes the effort to write to them at every opportunity).

Her latest contract -- a long-term position as the body guard of some no-name noble who thinks much too highly of himself -- has taken her to Kirkwall, though she's less than happy to be in the Free Marches. The building tensions between the mages and the Templar order make her more than a little uneasy. She had originally accepted the contract thinking she would be able to see beautiful sights like the western side of the Vinmark Mountains. Instead, she spends all of her time within the boundaries of the City of Chains; her employer is a paranoid sort, seeing threats and conspiracies which, to his credit, Charumati can't exactly fault him for considering the state of the city. Her contract still has a year to go before it expires, so she's doing her best to live simply despite being required to stay in Hightown in her employer's home. She hopes to simply finish out the contract in peace, earn the sovereigns she's owed, and survive the hellmouth she currently lives in. She can't wait to get back to Rivain, and vows she'll only take local contracts for the next few years if she survives this one.
